“We’ve retained our independence but eliminated the hassle and worry of managing a big house,” explained Evelyn. “Our apartment is still a great size. We have a spare bedroom and more than enough space to host our family on Christmas Day.”
The Burts wanted a development where they could enjoy their own view, garden and privacy, as well as having the opportunity to meet like-minded neighbours.
Evelyn said: “We knew it was home. No-one could come out here and not be happy. Milltimber is a great area and Woodland Grove is a lovely building. It’s so secluded, with such beautiful grounds, I feel like I’m in a country club. But we’re not home too often; we’re always on the go.”
This trend was highlighted in the Knight Frank 2010 Retirement Housing report. It said: “People are living longer, healthier and more active lives, and this will have a dramatic impact on housing requirements. The need for residential care is diminishing.” It also referred to “the need to release equity and, potentially, move to a smaller property rather than the traditional pattern of a move from a family-sized house to a warden-assisted flat.”
Woodland Grove offers exclusive, luxury living for active independent people over 55 who are looking to downsize, freeing up finances and time to ensure a comfortable and manageable third age. It was the only Scottish property to reach the Daily Telegraph’s recent list of ‘Britain’s Most Desirable Retirement Properties.’
The beautiful 14-acre site is nestled in semi-rural location at Milltimber, a sought-after suburb close to Aberdeen’s West End, providing the ideal balance between the buzz of the city centre and the tranquillity of the countryside.
The charming four-storey refurbished Victorian granite building is surrounded by gardens and woodland. No expense has been spared in developing the one-bed and two-bed apartments, from the quality en-suites and designer kitchens to the tasteful internal oak doors and sun-catching balconies. Space is of the essence throughout, with an abundance of fitted wardrobes and cupboards. Apartments are available on ground level, first, second and third floors, with lift access to all levels. Although they each boast their own quirky features, they are decorated in neutral tones and allow owners to turn the house into a home to suit them. Woodland Grove also provides communal owners’ lounges, elegantly furnished to the highest of standards.
Home ownership offers privileges at a local gym and spa, golf course, furniture store, supermarket and deli and, to remove concerns about the stress of moving, a family-run removal firm. When family and friends visit, Woodland Grove owners receive preferential rates at Aberdeen’s only 5 star serviced apartments.
Woodland Grove director Bill Burr commented: “I know we’ve got something really special here. We are not a retirement village. We are definitely not a care home. Some owners are still in full-time work and most are very active. With an aging population, it is important that house builders reflect the way people actually live their lives. We remove the hassle of running a larger home and allow owners to get on with the rest of their independent lives. This is a well-tested concept in the USA and Scandinavia. As the number of people aged over 55 increases, Scotland needs to catch up.”
ACTS Retirement-Life Communities owns 23 senior living communities in east America and underpins the same theory as Woodland Grove: luxury living for active people over 55. ACTS Corporate Director, Michael Smith, said: “Our communities are places that people want to be and the experience helps to keep them active and independent. It’s like being on a cruise ship, or college campus, for older adults. People are drawn in by the five star lifestyle and sociable atmosphere. The opportunity to downsize and give up the burden and cost of maintaining their home is usually a big incentive, too.”
“We’ve offered Americans this lifestyle for nearly 40 years. In that time the concept has evolved and, despite the recent economic conditions, it’s still in demand and will continue to grow in popularity as the baby boomers retire. It’s great to hear about a similar project in Scotland.”
Half of the luxurious homes at Woodland Grove have already been sold and are occupied, indicating that the local market is likely to catch on to the new concept.
Patricia and Alec Edwicker were the first people to move into the neighbourhood. Patricia said: “Woodland Grove ticks all the boxes. It was a fixed price, it’s located in the country and it boasts excellent views. But the fact that our Alsatian dog, Roxy, is welcome is the jewel in the crown.”
Norma Downton, a close friend of Patricia and Alec, has lived at Woodland Grove for almost a year. She said: “Woodland Grove offers independence and companionship. There’s always something going on and I’ve made some great friends here." With a concierge and excellent security system – all apartments have intruder alarms and door entry security video systems – owners have total peace of mind. "I feel very comfortable here. Even at night, I’m confident returning to my apartment alone.”
Woodland Grove has a range of floor plans, house styles and prices, starting from £195,000 (at December 2010). An assisted sale scheme is available. Plan a visit to experience the wonderful community offered at Woodland Grove and tour the show homes to find out which best suits you.
