Holidays are a time for re-charging the batteries, adventure, exploration and experiences. It’s the ideal time to take advantage of all the great offers that are available in the UK, to get out and explore your local area or even go a little further afield for a mini-break.
With research showing that 7 in 10 people took a holiday in England in 2010 and that 60% of those want to take more holidays in the UK as a result, it seems the ‘staycation’ is going strong.
It seems many of us have changed our holiday plans this year in an effort to save the pounds due to the current economic climate. The over 50’s have been particularly affected with pension worries, rising inflation affecting savings and tax changes.
OscarUK.co.uk, the leading concessions website dedicated to the over 50s, recently carried out a survey which revealed that 84% of over 50s have changed their holiday plans this year and a quarter are taking more holidays in the UK as it’s cheaper than going abroad. A combination of the weakening pound and the debt crisis in European destinations has pushed up the cost of our favourite sunshine holidays.
It’s not just the cost cutting that is keeping us in the UK this Summer, according to OscarUK’s research of the over 50s, the other top three reasons are that it is easy to organise (60%), easy to travel (59%) and the beautiful scenery (55%). This is no surprise as with its rich history, the UK provides a wide variety of places to visit – from mountains to beaches, castles to theatres and lakes to gardens, we have it all on our doorstep!
OscarUK has put together a free Essential Guide to Summer in the UK which, in addition to offering 39 savings and tips, is packed with ideas on attractions, accommodation and eating out, whether entertaining grandchildren or heading out on a day trip with friends. Helping to keep money in your back pocket, this guide will help you to explore the UK come rain or shine.
