All parents know that the early years before children start school are vital in a child’s life.At Home-Start we believe parents have the key role in creating a secure childhood for their children. It’s just that sometimes they need a bit of help, YOUR HELP!!
Knowing that you have helped; a boost to your self-esteem and confidence, even a foot on the ladder towards a new job! Volunteers receive training, out of pocket expenses and support.
Home-Start is a national charity with schemes in hundreds of local communities. We recruit and train volunteers to help families with young children. Our volunteers, who know about being a parent, visit families at home each week, supporting parents in situations as diverse as isolation, bereavement, multiple births, illness, disability or who are just finding parenting a struggle. They provide non-judgemental, practical and emotional support helping to build a family’s confidence and ability to cope.
In Sheffield we have 88 current volunteers of all ages, many of them have reached the stage where their own children have grown up and they would like to feel needed or give something back to their community.
One of our volunteers, Sue saw the advert for Home-Start volunteers and wanted to feel needed. Sue has now been a volunteer for 10 years and describes the experience as friendly, welcoming, interesting, and rewarding. In addition to working with many vulnerable families and helping out at our specialist toddler group she has attended every training course offered by Home-Start to our volunteers!
In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, the theatre, holidays and general socialising.
We are currently recruiting volunteers to start training in November and January if you are interested and would like to apply please contact us on 0114 2788377 or visit our website www.hssheffield.org.uk/volunteer.htm
If you live outside Sheffield but are interested in Home-Start opportunities please contact the free information line on 0800 068 63 68 to locate your local scheme.
