Many people are keen to add a personal touch to their property but do not have the confidence to demonstrate their decorating skills, craft a cupboard or perform some plastering.
A growing number of over 50s have said they are willing to undertake DIY tasks around the home as they want to 'improve not move' in order to get the most out of their house during the current economic climate.
Research by Saga Home Insurance revealed that homeowners aged over 50 want to add value to their property through DIY jobs as they cannot afford to hire a professional tradesman.
Enrolling on construction courses will enable people to perfect their practical skills or add to their abilities in all areas of DIY without having to splash out on expensive tradesmen to do the job for them.
Completing a construction course will also provide people with a great feeling of pride and independence as they will possess the power to create their ideal home.
Private training provider Able Skills have devised short weekend programmes for people looking to gain some sound DIY skills in plastering, tiling, bricklaying, carpentry and decorating.
Weekend DIY courses are aimed at those of you who have some jobs, repairs or alterations at home which need attending to or for anyone who just wants to gain an insight into home improvements.
Such courses will provide you with the required training to make those essential changes, as well as advising you on health and safety and guidance on all tools and materials required to complete jobs to a high standard and safely.
DIY can be dangerous if you do not know what you are doing and can be costly if you employ the wrong person so these courses will encourage enthusiasts to achieve their aims and get it right the first time.
More than a third of over 50s claim they are so confident that they rarely seek DIY advice from friends; family or professionals but one in five confessed to sometimes carrying out a job without having the appropriate knowledge.
These people may want to take construction courses as they would learn how not to damage their house and injure themselves.
Men in their 50s seem self-assured in their DIY expertise with one in five claiming that they are happy to carry out jobs around the house but just ten per cent of women feel the same way.
Able Skills was launched in 2002 and can provide training for anyone looking to learn a construction trade whether they are looking at guidance for DIY purposes or considering a change of career.
Quality and value for money are priority for every member of Able Skills team; we promote honesty and offer progression and support in everything we do.
We are confident in the delivery of our training and encourage everyone to pay us a visit to see firsthand what we do; no appointments are necessary, no sales team and no pressure.
