Suzanne's Pet Project
Designer Dresses, Coats, Top Hats and Bow Ties for Pets
Having suffered redundancy a couple of times, at 50 Suzanne Morrall was looking for more permanency when she started her own business. At least she would be master of her own destiny and, with her own efforts, could build a more secure future doing something she really enjoyed.
Nevertheless, it was a big step and completely out of her comfort zone. Previously she had worked in sales and recruitment which suited her outgoing personality. But she also had a creative side and longed to put that to good use.
Working for herself, Suzanne soon discovered there was more to running her business than designing outfits for pets. She had to always be one step ahead - find new customers, patent designs, look after cash flow and keep on top of the many other unexpected tasks involved in setting up and running a business.
Flexible and Industrious
Suzanne’s company, Mischief Pet Products, was started early in 2007. “I design beds, carriers and clothes for pets such as coats, dresses, wedding dresses, top hats, bow ties, cowboy outfits - you name it and I will create it.”
As well as the exclusive designer pet products which are individually created for a specific pet, Mischief Pet Products also have ranges of standard products which are popular with customers and make great presents.”
To complement pet designer wear, Suzanne's plans to open her first pet grooming parlour at Hawley Garden Centre in January.
Tentative First Steps
“If you have a dream about starting your own company it is important to realise that there are going to be challenging times as well as good times. You may have a good idea but be new to many of the tasks that you will face starting out in business. If that's the case and money is tight, then I would suggest finding an undemanding job to supplement your income whilst you build your company to a point where you have sufficient customers and earnings.”
For Suzanne, setting up business has been a steep learning curve - scary but fun and stressful at times too, but she says that she would do it all again.
