York’s Newest Museum

Where you can find out more about the craft of Quiltmaking

Although it opened in June 2008, the Quilt Museum and Gallery in York is a novel attraction for visitors.

They come from as far afield as North America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, proving that quiltmaking is truly an international craft.

Showing the Very Best of Quiltmaking

The Quilt Museum and Gallery, operated by The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles, shows the best of quiltmaking through the centuries.

In addition to featuring heritage quilts from the Guild’s own Collection, it also highlights modern work by textile artists. What is more, exhibitions take place in the historic splendour of St Anthony’s Hall, a refurbished 15th century guildhall that is especially suited to the display of large textiles.

Founded by Enthusiasts

The Quilters’ Guild is a national educational charity founded more than 30 years ago by a group of patchwork and quilting enthusiasts. St Anthony’s Hall houses the Guild’s headquarters in addition to its collection of some 800 items.

These include the oldest known signed and dated patchwork, the colourful 1718 silk coverlet; quilts representing the many distinct styles of the craft in the UK; miniatures; quilted clothing; contemporary work; tools, equipment and fabric samples that date from the 19th century.
