Back in the mists of time

Christmas markets started in Germany in the Middle Ages and were set up during the period of Advent - the four weeks leading up to Christmas.

The oldest recorded Christmas street market was said to have been held in Vienna around 1294 and the one held in Dresden since 1434 now has over 250 stalls and attracts between 1.5 and 2 million people each year. People come from all over Europe to experience the atmosphere of the colourful markets and take part in a tradition that dates back into history.

Making Christmas special

In southern Germany and Austria they are sometimes called "Christkindelsmarkt", meaning "Christ child market". These are usually held in the town square and the market sells food, drink, and seasonal items from open-air stalls, accompanied by traditional singing and dancing. The markets are opened in some towns by a small boy representing the Christ child and popular attractions are a Nativity Scene with crib and a brightly decorated Christmas tree.

Keeping out the cold

Hot mulled wine known as Glühwein is served, sometimes with a shot of brandy to keep out the cold. Stalls sell local bratwurst, cookies and gingerbread to the shoppers and handmade items, books and toys and all worth buying.
