Dr Ruth Jeffcoate from the Lake District Calvert Trust explains why this need not stop you from abseiling in the Borrowdale Valley, sailing a catamaran on Lake Windermere, paragliding off the side of Skiddaw fell, climbing a mountain, or riding a horse!
Why? Because our 30 years experience as pioneers in the world of outdoor adventurous activities have proven that neither disability nor age are barriers to enjoyment and achievement!
With a wealth of experience, specially-trained activity Instructors and our wide range of adaptive equipment, you can join one of our full-board residential activity courses and prove to yourself (and others), that it’s what you CAN do that counts!
At the Lake District Calvert Trust, we believe in inclusion. We encourage you to bring friends and supporters without disabilities on your holiday so that you can prove to yourself that you can do just as much as they can!
You can choose a weekend, 5-day or full week course, staying at our fully accessible Activity Centre on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake. Your multi-activity programme will be specifically tailored to your level of ability and with your aims and objectives for the visit in mind.
We will provide all of the instruction, equipment, outdoor gear and encouragement needed for you to attain your goals. You will meet lots of other people with disabilities, make new friends, challenge your disability and soak up the fantastic scenery of the Lake District into the bargain.
Our Activity Centre boasts a TV room, games room, indoor sports/climbing hall, and a revolutionary new Water Centre which is the first of its kind in the UK. The Water Centre has a fully accessible hydrotherapy pool with spa, Jacuzzi, overhead/underwater sound and light projection, lots of sensory programmes and a sauna. A sensory room and sensory garden are also available.
So, if you’ve ever fancied having a go at sports such as canoeing, ghyll scrambling, archery, dinghy sailing, hand cycling and land yachting, your disability is no longer an obstacle. Do it with the Lake District Calvert Trust and have a truly life-changing experience!
In addition to our standard multi-activity courses, we also offer Specialist Courses in some activities. These are ideal for someone who has just learned a new skill in an activity and wants to progress their knowledge and ability in the sport.
The Specialist Courses incorporate theory as well as practice, and most lead to recognised awards from the sport’s National Governing Body. So, fun activities can also now be educational!
For those who would like to try just one or two activities in a less-structured manner (or do no activities at all), the Lake District Calvert Trust has 3 self-catering cottages.
The cottages are all fully accessible and are situated in a secluded courtyard complex just outside the town centre of Keswick. Beautifully appointed, the cottages are of considerable historic importance – they were once the home of William and Dorothy Wordsworth!
Try something different on your holiday this year, and change your life forever!
