Your expectations – no matter how grand – will always be surpassed. The sheer power of nature is humbling and simply stupefying.
In full spate, normally attained in about April or May, these Falls, that mark the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, are a sheer curtain of water a mile wide that crashes over the basalt rock 100 yards down to the Batoka Gorge of that famed icon of Africa, the Zambezi River. To gain perspective, that is more than double the size of Niagara Falls.
Victoria Falls is the unchallenged Adventure Capital of Africa and a wide array of activities are on offer to suit soft adventure, such as an idyllic cruise on the Zambezi or helicopter flip, through to many possibilities for the pure adrenalin junkie – world’s finest one-day rafting, a bunji jump off the bridge a terrifying 111 metres down to the river, gorge swings, canoeing in the territory of crocodiles and hippos, walking with lions, riding elephants, walking in the wilds and much more.

The stand-out first-choice hotel for those who seek the wondrous glow of the destination at its most charming – a tranquil ambience of the authentic African wilderness, yet a stone’s throw from the action – is Victoria Falls Safari Lodge (VFSL), the flagship property of the Africa Albida Tourism group. Trip Advisor features more than 120 compelling comments...”an outlook to die for”......”just sit and watch the elephants”....”this was Nirvana for us....”
Its long list of international accolades is testimony to its pedigree of excellence. Most recently the 72-roomed lodge won Zimbabwe's “Best Safari Lodge” award for the 16th successive year as awarded by trade experts, the Association of Zimbabwe Travel Agents. Over the years, since opening its doors in December 1994, VFSL has piled up the praise – it has featured in Vogue and Habitat, Tattler called it one of the world’s “10 Best Kept Secrets”, the Heineken Awards named its Buffalo Bar one of the “Great Bars of the World”, Conde Nast Traveler USA has featured the lodge in its Gold List of the “World’s Best Places to Stay” and there have also been a string of awards for its two restaurants including the award for the Most Imaginative Menu for MaKuwa-Kuwa Restaurant and the Best Dinner Experience for The Boma – Place of Eating.
Among the thatched lodge’s most enchanting features is the astounding vista from dining room, bar and bedrooms as well as the gourmet cuisine of the MaKuwa-Kuwa Restaurant. VFSL is perched high on a ridge and the undisturbed vista seems to stretch to infinity. It is the only lodge in Victoria Falls that faces West and affords a view of those spectacular African sunsets, especially from the Buffalo Bar and the terrace where herds of elephants and buffalo at the lodge’s on-site waterhole are a frequent sight. A gin and tonic or ice-cold beer never tasted so good!
The ethnic Boma – Place of Eating Restaurant located on the same complex is a rousing nightly cultural extravaganza of music, dancing, drumming and exotic local foods on the barbecue and is far-and-away the most popular public dinner restaurant in Victoria Falls, often filled to its 300-seat capacity.
Victoria Falls is a year-round destination with a hot, sunny climate, but prime time to see the waterfall at its majestic height is February through July, with peak in May. The beauty of Victoria Falls as a destination is that there is easy daily access using Johannesburg as the primary gateway (flying time is just 90 minutes) and the ability to combine a safari to one of Africa’s greatest parks, the Chobe in Botswana, just 80 kilometres away on a good tar road.
In May 2011 Africa Albida Tourism unveiled a new addition to its portfolio – the 8-suite Ngoma Safari Lodge located in the Chobe Forest Reserve, just 3 kilometres from the Chobe National Park. Committed to making a sustainable difference to the local communities and their environment Ngoma Safari Lodge is a joint community and privately funded project in association with the Chobe Enclave Conservation Trust (CECT).
