Surf and Turf are specialists and organise small group travel to South Africa for a holiday of a lifetime.
You will be picked up from the airport by your Surf and Turf tour guide and transferred to a lovely local hotel where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing and acclimatising to ‘African time’, where nothing is rushed and worries are left behind.
You will also get to meet your fellow travellers over dinner, and excitement for your upcoming adventure will give you plenty to talk about.
After a leisurely breakfast it will be time to hit the road, and we will begin our journey to the beautiful mountainous Mpumalanga region of South Africa. After approximately four hours we will reach our first attraction at Sudwala Caves, the oldest know caves in the world. After lunch and the cave tour we will head on to our accommodation for the night.
Today is all about exploring the stunning waterfalls and scenery that make the Panorama Route along the Drakensberg mountain escarpment so famous, touring from one waterfall to another until we reach our destination at Blyde River Canyon. The Blyde is the third deepest canyon in the world and probably the most beautiful.
Viewpoints visited today will include: Horse Shoe Falls, Lone Creek Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Mac Mac Falls and Mac Mac Pools, God’s Window and finally Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
We will stay in the beautiful Blyde River Canyon area for the day. For those who are up to a bit of a challenge there are a number of different hiking trails starting from the accommodation, and these vary from approximately 1 hour to 5 hours and offer a selection of difficulty levels. These hikes are a great way to explore the flora and fauna of this part of South Africa, with wildlife and bird watching opportunities along the way.
Optional activities include relaxing around the pool, horse riding and re-visiting your favourite scenic sights from day 3.
Today is the journey from the very top of the Drakensberg (the Escarpment) down to the Lowveld along slaloming mountain passes, with a stop at the ‘Three Rondavels’ (mountain pinnacles) to enjoy the view. We will arrive at our accommodation in Swadini at the base of the mountain range in time for lunch, after which we can unpack and settle in to our new surroundings.
In the afternoon we will enjoy a group horse riding trip through the Blyde area, taking in the many exciting sights and sounds from a different vantage point. Horseback is a wonderful way to explore a relatively untouched natural region, and no previous riding experience is necessary.
A trip to the Blyde River would not be complete without a boat ride through this amazing river at the base of this spectacular canyon, so after a relaxed breakfast we will head out on a cruise, visiting the rare living Kadisha Tufa waterfall and experiencing the Three Rondavels from a completely different viewpoint. There is so much to do in the area that we have left the afternoon free for you to do whatever you want, from relaxing around the pool to enjoying one of the many activities on offer.
Optional activities include bird watching, hiking, white river rafting, microlighting, abseiling, kloofing and quad biking.
In the morning we will head off to the nearby Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre where local animals that have been abandoned or wounded are taken to be nursed back to health. Such animals usually include: lion, leopard, serval, cheetah, hyena, honey badger, eagles and vultures. Again the afternoon is free to do whatever you are in the mood for.
Optional activities include bird watching, hiking, white river rafting, microlighting, abseiling, kloofing and quad biking.
Today we travel to the world famous Kruger National Park, a game reserve the size of Wales that allows visitors the opportunity to spot game in its natural environment, truly the African bush at its best. The journey to the gate is not far, so the day will be spent game spotting on the drive to Skukuza Camp. We should arrive at the camp during the afternoon, after which you can enjoy exploring the camp (one of the Kruger's largest) or relaxing by the pool.
During the evening we will go for a guided game drive in an open air vehicle led by a professional game ranger, exploring the wild as night falls.
Early morning and dusk are the best times to spot game, so this will be an early morning! We will gather whilst it is still dark and be taken on a guided game walk through the bush whilst the day breaks, truly a breathtaking experience. A game walk enables you to encounter the smaller wildlife of the park, and may also allow you to get much closer to the animals than you would be able to by car.
The afternoon will be spent game spotting and relaxing.
The rest of the trip is centred around game spotting and seeing Africa in its purest and most natural form. Each day will be spent exploring the Kruger by Surf and Turf minibus, with either a guided morning drive, evening/afternoon drive or morning walk each day.
As for day 10.
Today is also all about game viewing, but includes the journey down from Skukuza Camp to the smaller and more intimate Berg en Dal Camp, near the border of the park.
As for day 10 at Berg en Dal Camp.
Today we will travel south east towards the cradle of mankind, where the oldest known fossils of humans and our predecessors have been found. After a relatively early start and a bit of a drive we will arrive at Lesedi Cultural Village. We will spend our last night in South Africa living in one of five cultural villages, experiencing an authentic taste of the traditional cultures of some of the well known African tribes.
Having been offered this beautiful and memorable cultural insight, we will experience the tribal way of a life of these proud and noble people, with the evening culminating in a spectacular dance display and feast of foods from around South Africa.
This morning we will all take the trip back to O. R. Tambo (Johannesburg) airport, arriving at approximately 11am.
Whether you are travelling with your partner or on your own, you can make new friends and enjoy this shared, life enhancing experience. Prices per person will depend on size of the group, so please find out more details from kathy@surfandturfsafaris.com
