It is part of The Okonjima Nature Reserve - 22,000 hectares of privately managed protected land in the heart of Namibia.
If your heart yearns for an adventure then Okonjima offers travellers an array of accommodation - from pure African luxury through to private campsites in the bush. And it is home to The AfriCat Foundation.
The Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the long term conservation of Namibia's large carnivores, in particular cheetahs and leopards.
AfriCat actively preserve habitats and promote awareness through education, research and animal welfare.
Amongst the wonderful wildlife, travelling through this landscape you may see Leopards, wild dogs, spotted hyaena and cheetahs roaming freely.
Okonjima's Grand African House is a truly exclusive villa. Luxurious yes, yet also in keeping with this exquisite landscape. The twenty-first century comforts will vastly exceed your expectations. This is Africa at its most creative and contemporary, whilst totally in tune with the surrounding landscape.
You can swim in the infinity pool overlooking the natural water hole. You can shower indoors or out. And the luxurious bedrooms and private suites have all you need in the way of necessities (mobile phone reception, wi-fi) but with oh-so-amazing panoramic views.
Okonjima have thought of everything. They have a whole host of accommodation to suit different budgets - from the luxury African Bush cottage to the Omboroko Campsites which lie within the Omboroko Mountains offering private self-catering.
You can trek in the wilderness or follow in the footsteps of ancient people on the Bushman Trail. You can look to the skies and identify some of the 250 species of birds such as the famous Rockrunner and Carp's Tit. Or maybe you'd like to help monitor the rehabilitated cheetahs, wild dog and hyaena by participating in any of the carnivore tracking trails. Finding the ever elusive leopard from the traditional African game-drive vehicle is also offered to all the guests staying on Okonjima.
Chances are, if you arrive in Okonjima you will want to know more about The AfriCat Foundation. What started out as a welfare organisation is now actively involved in large carnivore research, community support and human-wildlife conflict mitigation, particularly cheetahs, leopards and lions on farmland and in captivity. They also provide humane housing, treatment and care for orphaned and injured animals, but the rehabilitation programme is what most of the trails focus on. AfriCat have rescued over a 1000 cheetah and leopard, but 86% have been released back into the wild or are rehabilitated within the 22 000ha Okonjima Reserve.
