Ancient and Mysterious, Modern and Dynamic

This is the land of the pharaohs; of the famed young King Tutankhamen and the literary world of Laurence Durrell where he based his enchanting Alexandria Quartet. This is the land where the beautiful Cleopatra seduced Julius Caesar. It is the land where Pharaohs used thousands of slaves to build the colossal pyramids and the mysterious Sphinx. It has something for everyone – modern and dynamic or ancient and mysterious.

The mighty Nile River has given sustenance to the people for centuries as the floods left a fertile alluvial plain which has fed the population since time began.  This is the river where the dhows transport goods and people.

Ancient Egyptian civilization began around 3150 BC with the political unification of the major Nile Valley cultures under the first pharaoh and it developed over the next five millennia. Its history is divided into a series of golden ages, known as Kingdoms but the power of the pharaohs officially ended in 31 BC when the early Roman Empire conquered Egypt and made it a province.  It is now one of the major powers in the Middle East.

A warm welcome

Today it is a land where the tourist will be made very welcome and where they will be able to really see the landscapes that bring to life the stories that they have known since their school days. 

The bustling city of Cairo where a visit to the museum should not be missed - the souks with their multitude of goods on offer – spices, carpets, exotic fruit and nuts tempt us to buy souvenirs of our visit.

The towering columns of Karnack where the setting sun throws shadows that evoke the mysteries of a long forgotten culture.  We can almost see glimpses of the ghosts of ancient Egypt just disappearing from view.

Abu Symbol shows the power of modern man to move the great blocks of carved stone to a new site to make way for man’s thirst for power – electricity. As we look at the carved faces we see the dreams of immortality showing us our own mortality. The grandeur is overwhelming.
