It is possible that the answer may be both. New figures from solar energy firm, Freetricity, show that take up of free solar panel installations for residential houses since April 2010 is highest among the over 50s.
The statistics seem to show that the older generation are not only interested in saving on fuel bills but are also interested in lowering their carbon footprint.
“Over 50’s represent around 43% of all adults in the UK but only 17% have mortgages compared to the national average of 65% says Paul Williams CEO of Freetricity.
“Additionally, as 80% of private wealth in the UK is held by the over 50’s, this suggests, as does other data, that the substantial savings on electricity bills gained by a free solar installation, may not be the prime reason for applications by over 50’s, but perhaps suggest a greater concern for the environment and in lowering their carbon footprint.”
Mr and Mrs Cornish from West Byfleet, Surrey are both retired. They decided to fit panels on their bungalow roof for a number of reasons: “Yes, we were keen to save on bills, but it is nice to think that you are also doing your bit for the environment” said Mr Cornish. “We had our panels fitted 3 months ago and we have already noticed the savings on our electricity bill.”
Freetricity are one of only five companies across the UK offering genuinely free solar installations worth up to £15,000 including all costs and 25 year maintenance contracts. To qualify, the property must be in England or Wales and have a large unshaded, unobstructed South, SE or SW facing roof. Take up for the Freetricity scheme has been significant and numbers are limited.
