The Health Benefits of Water

From losing weight to improving your well-being

The human body is composed of almost 80% water. In the brain this proportion is even higher. It is therefore obvious that water, in any form, could have an influence on our health and well-being.

Drinking Water:

Water knocks off the poundsFor a long time, many physicians have recommended drinking a sufficient amount of water during dieting or taking part in a weight-loss program. In doing so, the feeling of hunger is lessened, having been absorbed by drinking water before each meal. A team of scientists led by Dr. Michael Boschmann of the Franz Vollhard Clinic at the Berlin Clinical Research Center ‘Charité’ stated that drinking-water not only has no calories, but actually burns off calories. "The daily consumption of just 1.5 to 2 litres of drinking-water can burn off up 100 kilocalories” says Dr. Michael Boschmann.

Breathing water: Salty air soothes the lungs

The beneficial properties of salty air for ailments such as pollen allergies, bronchitis and respective chronic breathing illnesses have been known for centuries. “It is not necessary to drive to the coast. The same effect can be enjoyed more intensively in places referred to as a ‘saline’ or ‘salt grotto’ (technical term: saltworks)” states Dr. Cornelius Lang of the Regena Health Resort in Bad Brückenau, Germany. Increasingly popular in spas and health resorts, a saline has a timber-frame construction with a black-thorn covering. With help from pumps, salt-water (brine) is distributed across the thorn walls of the saline. As the brine trickles through the branches, a part of the water begins to evaporate. During this process the salty air begins to spread out, from which tiny yet beneficial water particles known as aerosols are formed and the health-promoting salty air spreads out; a tingly fresh air that is soothing for the bronchia and lungs, especially beneficial for pollen allergies, bronchitis and respective chronic breathing illnesses.

Treading water:

Bringing out the body’s defenses and keeping them on the go
Contact with water causes the skin, blood vessels and nerves to react. This effect was first noticed by the famous Bavarian ‘water doctor’ Sebastian Kneipp, who used this effect for the enhancement of health. It is well known that treading water, hydrotherapy etc. is beneficial for bettering the body’s defenses and stabilizing the cardiovascular system. Additionally, venous insufficiency, movement pains, sleep disturbances, sweating, cold feet, numbness in the legs and arms or even anxiety can be successfully cared for with hydrotherapeutic ‘Kneipp Cure’ applications.
