Survey reveals that men are too embarrassed to get a Prostate Cancer Check

Celebrity chef Brian Turner has teamed up with Prostate UK and BAUS (British Association of Urological Surgeons), in Glasgow to help save men’s lives.

Urological surgeons and prostate cancer specialists from the UK and around the world attended the conference in Glasgow. It showcased new, holistic approaches to treating the disease and discussed the progress in hormonal therapy.

Each year, 221,000 men die of prostate cancer and 678,000 men live with the condition. If caught early, it's a treatable disease, but embarrassment, ignorance and macho attitudes prevent men from getting checked out.

New research reveals 46% of men aged 55 and over have never had a prostate cancer check and do not plan to have one. Of these men, seven per cent think the test would be too embarrassing and one in four believe they were not at risk of developing prostate cancer at all. Worrying, considering men over 50 are most at risk of the disease.

Almost a third (30%) of men over 55 believe the prostate check would be too invasive and one in 25 say it is an invasion of their masculinity. Reassuringly, 72% of men in this age group share their intimate medical problems with their wives or partners and don’t keep it to themselves.

According to the survey, some men over 55 (one in four) don’t even know whether they had had a check or not. Surprisingly, 27% of women are unsure if they’d had a prostate check-up, even though this medical examination does not apply to women at all.

Diet and healthy eating can make a difference to the prevention of the disease, although the research shows only 37% of men over 55 are aware of this.

Chef Brian Turner, an active supporter of the Prostate UK charity, was on hand at the event to give handy hints and tasty recipes with foods which can help the prevention and onset of the disease.
